The clearest sign of a leak is oil on the ground under the car. Oil leaks from the hub oil seals of a live rear axle (See Replacing transmission oil seals), may also leave traces on the inner surfaces of the wheels, or even get into the brakes. Leaks on to the wheels or brakes may also be caused by defective wheel bearings (See Removing wheel bearings).

I'm looking at a very attractively priced backhoe loader however it is looking very rusty. Test drove it and It seems fine but dirty and greasy around all the pins. I don't think it was well cared for by the ocean town it was in before. I inspected the chassis and it seems like the rust is only on the light metal or on replaceable parts.

Just because they make it doesn't mean it's good for your machine. Companies like woods do make aftermarket backhoe kits where the backhoe is removable but mount to a set of plates that are attached into the frame of the tractor.

You can buy loader support kits that attach the rear axle to the loader bucket. These supports take some of the force off of the transmission housing when you lift items with your loader bucket. If you are mechanically inclined, you can bolt or weld steel supports that run from the front loader to the rear of the tractor.
